Sony announced its anticipated entry into the tablet device market, stating that its “Sony Tablet” offers “the perfect combination of hardware, content and network with seamless usability for a high-quality, engaging entertainment experience.” The company will offer two versions, one currently codenamed S1, which is optimised for “rich media entertainment,” and an S2, which is “ideal for mobile communication and entertainment.” The Android 3.0 terminals will be available globally from the third quarter of 2011.
The most interesting feature of the proposed line is the dual 5.5” display clamshell design of the S2, which the company said “allows its displays to be combined and used as a large screen or for different functions such as playing video on one screen while showing control buttons on the other.” The S1 has a more traditional, 9.4” display. Both will be “3G/4G” compatible. In a statement, Sony also highlighted integration with its Qriocity music and video services, and support for first-generation PlayStation titles through its PlayStation Suite application. Users will also be able to download ebook content from the company’s Reader Store.
Sony has revealed their latest hardware today, the Playstation Tablet coming in two different forms known as S1 and S2. The Tegra-powered device, S1 has a whooping 9.4 inch screen and the S2, which much resembles a familiar device and can fold like one, the DS.
They are the first tablet that carries the “PlayStation Certified” logo, allowing us to play Playstation 1 games or Sony-approved titles for mobile platforms legally. More views of the mini PC in the debut trailer above.
